All academic standards will be impacted by the requested materials. The reading literature standards can all be learned through great examples of literature. Keeping students immersed in great texts is the best way to meet those academic standards. Students need stuff that works! Pencil, and sharpened ones at that, are the most basic of supplies that students need. Obviously, if they can have pencils that work and are sharp, they can learn and write about that learning. Anything that makes their work easier will also make the standards more accessible.
