My preschool students are back in the classroom for the first time in a year and a half. Having clear visuals and organizers for the designated spaces around the classroom (such as the library area) assists my preschoolers in learning the appropriate behavior expectations for different activities. If there is a small rug in the library area, this will layout the boundary of the quiet reading space and will help students visualize the separation between play areas and reading areas. Putting some of the books that won’t fit in the small bookcase into organization bins will teach children to sort items and put items back in their correct place when they are finished with them. The room divider will further help the students learn to respect the boundaries of the designated places within the classroom. It is important to teach behavior expectations so the students know how they are to appropriately behave if they are in a quiet library space versus a play area. In the library area, having it be comfortable, quiet, and private will help the students learn how to appropriately handle books, sit for the duration of a story and learn from the stories they read!
