The group homes program is under the umbrella of alternative education for my school district. Under this umbrella we are provided with funding for materials like books, paper, pencils, calculators, but what we can't use our funding for is rewards. Some of our students want absolutely nothing to do with school once they come to us which is understandable given the situation they have been placed in. You have to think if you were taken from your home, and be unsure of what you were going to do in the future school is the last thing on your mind. Some students see school as a means to escape their current situation to them it may be the only normal thing they have. What we would like to do is give students more incentive for coming to school, and doing great work. Great work deserves to be noticed, and should be rewarded. We have learned over the years that our students love snacks. What teenager doesn't? When they do good on a really difficult test we want to reward them for that. When they went from making D's, and F's to A's, and B's we want to make sure they are getting noticed for that, and getting rewarded with snacks when they do. Snacks can be an excellent motivator, and eventually can turn a student from not wanting to go to school, and not wanting help with their work to actually enjoying school once they realize they are more than capable of doing well in school.
