A typical day in the unified choir consists of singing along to either karaoke tracks or a guitar played by me. Students enjoy the singing, but I want them to feel like the music they create is truly theirs. Ukuleles would allow students to create music that was truly their own as they learn to accompany themselves. Our school is adding unified ukulele in partnership with the Special Olympics. Thanks to them, I have been able to take classes specific to teaching ukulele to autistic children. I have learned how to make modifications for students with varying abilities, including using colored strings. One exciting aspect of the unified ukulele program is that it allows students to help one another. If one student is struggling to play a chord, another student can step in and help them. This opportunity will allow a class that is already an amazing place for collaboration and positive attitudes to become even better.
