By providing our school with two class sets plus teacher copies of the newly published novel, LOTERIA by Karla Valenti, our students will be able to engage in a school-wide "Everybody Reads" type activity. The book, written by a Mexican-born author who currently lives in Chicago with her family, will provide students with both a story of adventure, cultural engagement, and the rare opportunity to also study the author as a role model given her shared heritage with our predominatly Mexican-American students. We intend to use the books as part of a collaborative reading project that celebrates Mexican heritage and traditions with our 7th and 8th grade classes. The book will be passed along to the 5th and 6th grades classes, and our teachers in 4th and 5th grade will use their copies as part of a read-aloud, whole class activity. Once the book has been read, we plan to invite the author for a visit and to enjoy a grades 3 through 8 celebration based on the story's adventure and theme.
