My students are striving hard to become more independent. They are working towards developing life skills to foster their self-esteem and competence in performing activities for daily living. My students have multiple disabilities. Despite their physical and cognitive challenges, each student is given hands-on opportunities to build their comprehension and ability to employ compensatory strategies. Although they may have difficulty in understanding instructional requests, our instruction provides for regular review and repetition. We strive to provide interesting lessons that build on prior knowledge and student strengths in age-appropriate, functional training such as cooking and cleaning. My students can learn from using concrete objects such as adapted learning materials and equipment. Your donation of janitorial supplies such as the janitorial cart, mop and sweeping set will be used for our daily living and vocational skills training as our students work alongside our school's custodial staff towards our school's beautification project. Although this donation contributes to only one of the components of our job skills training, it really helps in our students training in not only training them in manual labor but also with following and giving directions accurately, communicating information, requesting or offering assistance, displaying appropriate workplace behavior and etiquette to name a few. We can help students prepare for the world of work in a number of ways through teaching them to gain an understanding of themselves and their abilities, interests, and values; and acquire effective decision-making skills and reach a more realistic goal. My students possess the potential to live and work in the community once they receive proper life skills instruction. These life skills and your donation of the materials needed are essential to job functioning and can provide them the opportunity to engage in meaningful employment in the community.
