My number one goal is always, first and foremost, to make sure every student feels safe, heard, respected, supported, and loved. One of the most effective ways to create a safe space for them to let their guard down and be their authentic selves is to take meticulous care in crafting a very homey environment with lots of flexible, interactive seating. Flexible seating, by nature, opens up the space for much more collaboration, discussion, and creativity. Most importantly, it empowers students to become more self directed in the way that invites choice and encourages responsibility. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, are less disruptive of their peers and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The mat will be used both indoors and outdoors to allow students more comfortable floor seating options, along with the lap desks. The rearrangeable cushions allow for flexibility in not only additional comfortable floor seating, but also in directing the flow of our various activities. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. I have seen how choice and space can positively affect my students’ creativity, empathy, confidence, and interactions with others. Mahalo for helping us grow through your aloha.
