Teddy Roosevelt once said "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." I like this quote and think it is very applicable to my classroom and school. We are a small, rural school located literally in the middle of a pasture. We don't have state of the art technology or fancy, frilly uniforms to wear. What we do have is a student body and teaching staff that is unmatchable. I have chosen to write this project because I see a need among my students for differentiation and a break in the monotony of the typical school days we all used to know. A typical classroom is equipped with rows of uncomfortable desks, just like it has been for many years. The children of today do not learn like we did and face entirely different struggles than we can even fathom. Their minds are bombarded 24/7 with information via social media and other forms of technology. The last thing they want to do is come to school and sit in a stiff, cold desk while they listen to someone talk. We've all been in their shoes. That staff meeting that just won't end. The training that drags on. The class that makes you want to lay your head down and fall asleep. Have you ever thought about what could make that tiring task a little more enjoyable? Possibly a comfortable seat? That is the concept behind flexible seating and the reason I am trying to get funding for lap desks, stadium seats, adjustable desks, cushions, and other materials for my class. I have done research and read lots of articles that state the value that flexible seating brings to a classroom and school. I hope you will choose to donate to this project and I thank you for taking the time to read this. These kids deserve the world!
