They arrived after the semester began, and they are eagerly sitting on my shelf, waiting for the first students to read them (the first quarter book was already assigned before they arrived.)\r\n\r\nMy plan is to use these books, as one of the \"quarter\" books students are asked to read independently, with the goal of each freshman completing four books by the end of the year.\r\n\r\nI'm using these books to put \"non anglo\" books into the hands of my students - be it African-American, Native, Asian, Female, etc. \r\n\r\nOne book in particular, was checked out by a student - A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds - it's already in the hands of a second student and a third is waiting to read it.\r\n\r\nI live in a very rural county. It's a mix of anglo students and native students. I am hoping by giving them new voices to learn from, this will expand their world.\r\n \r\nRight now I'm working to get them \"into\" reading. These kits have been integral in helping them understand key engineering concepts in a hands-on, interactive way.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting moments came when the students first saw the materials. Their faces lit up with excitement as they unboxed the buoyancy kits. They immediately started experimenting with the components, eager to apply what they had learned in class. The hands-on nature of the materials turned theoretical concepts into tangible learning experiences, and the energy in the room was contagious. The kits allowed students to test how different shapes and materials influence buoyancy, fostering curiosity and critical thinking as they made connections between science and engineering.\r\n\r\nThe highlight of the project was our participation in the **Aluminum Boat Challenge**, where 24 of our students competed against several schools. It was amazing to see how the students took the principles they learned and applied them to design, build, and test their own boats. While we didn't win this year, the process was invaluable. Students developed teamwork, problem-solving, and engineering skills that they will carry forward.\r\n\r\nThis project is not just a one-time experience. It has sparked an ongoing interest in engineering, and our goal is to grow the number of students participating in the challenge each year. We aim to continue building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that will allow us to improve our boats and ultimately win the competition in future years. In the next steps of the project, students will be refining their designs and applying additional principles of engineering to improve their boats' performance, focusing on materials, weight distribution, and design modifications.\r\n\r\nYour support has given these students the opportunity to engage in a real-world engineering challenge, providing them with valuable skills that will benefit them in their academic careers and beyond.
