While my students are anxious to learn, many times their sensory needs inhibit them from being able to focus on learning tasks. Have you ever been in a meeting and feed like you can't sit still? Do you ever bite your nails or chew on your pen? Do you ever wrap yourself up tightly in a blanket after work? When you do these things, you are meeting your sensory needs. For most of us, our sensory needs are fleeting, muted, and easily met. But could you imagine how it would feel to have those urges all of the time, without any relief all while you are being required to complete a task that takes some brain power? My students know this feeling, because for many of them it is relentless. Students require their sensory needs to be met, before they are able to focus on learning. It is unfair for me to expect my students to complete tasks when they are so uncomfortable. For my project, I have carefully chosen sensory items that would meet a variety of sensory needs. While some students have one type of sensory need, other students have multiple sensory needs that need to be met in many different ways. Some students may require headphones to block out loud noises, while others find comfort in doing physical activity that calms their bodies. Some students prefer to chew on something to help them focus when they are completing a difficult task. If I can meet my students' sensory needs, I will be able to help them meet their academic goals as well. Thank you for considering my project.
