Even in our technology and digital-driven age, students still need to develop their literacy skills! While the advancements in digital media contribute to students’ learning, it’s proven that breaks from screen time and tactile, hands-on texts, improve students’ literary retention. Students will improve their ELA skills as well as continue to develop as reflective, mindful learners. Coelho’s “The Alchemist,” an allegorical fable, pairs excellent in conjunction with other literary genres such as Aesop’s fables, the study of myths and legends from around the world, creation stories and other studies, including modern day, spoken word poetry, taught in World Literature.
