Students are learning how to think critically about the role of science in society. They're practicing skills like citing evidence, evaluating sources, and drawing connections between past events and current issues in environmental science, medicine, and industry.\r\n\r\nOur classroom has become a hub of interdisciplinary learning. We've paired our reading with hands-on lessons about radiation, glow-in-the-dark phosphorescence, and chemical safety labeling. In one memorable discussion, students debated modern parallels to the Radium Girls case—everything from microplastics to tech workers exposed to harmful substances.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have said this is the first book that made them truly feel the impact of science on real lives. One student said, \"I never knew a science story could be so emotional and powerful. I'll never look at a periodic table the same way again.\"\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide books—it brought a vital story to life. You helped students see that science is not just formulas and labs; it's a human endeavor with consequences, responsibilities, and the power to create change.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us illuminate both minds and history.","fullyFundedDate":1746471026381,"projectUrl":"project/illuminating-history-and-chemistry-with/9260678/","projectTitle":"Illuminating History and Chemistry with Radium Girl","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. H.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp514854_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1523541290055","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/514854"},{"teacherId":514854,"projectId":7862499,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support of the Empowering Minds: Fund the Hidden Figures Book Drive, our classroom has been transformed into a place of powerful discovery, inspiration, and deep discussion.\r\n\r\nReading Hidden Figures has introduced students to far more than just historical facts—it's opened the door to conversations about perseverance, equity, scientific innovation, and the vital contributions of Black women in STEM. Students are developing critical reading skills like analyzing tone, identifying bias, citing textual evidence, and making historical connections. We've used the text to practice close reading and Socratic-style discussions, where students connect the themes of the book to present-day social and scientific issues.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading isn't passive. It's collaborative and alive. Students annotate, ask questions, write reflections, and work in groups to connect what they're reading to what we're learning in science and math. One powerful moment came during a lesson on Newton's laws, when a student drew a connection between Katherine Johnson's trajectory calculations and our physics unit—proof that these books are helping students bridge disciplines and think critically.\r\n\r\nSome students who don't usually identify as \"readers\" have been captivated by this book—especially girls and students of color who see themselves reflected in the brilliance and courage of the Hidden Figures. One student shared, \"I didn't know someone like me helped put a man on the moon. That makes me want to try harder in math.\"\r\n\r\nYour donation gave these students the opportunity to not only read a great book—but to see themselves in history and imagine themselves shaping the future. Your donation has made a lasting impact on my ESOL students, and I can already see the positive changes unfolding in the classroom.\r\n\r\nSince receiving the books, our reading sessions have transformed. For many of my students, reading can be a challenging experience, but A Long Way Down has sparked their interest and engaged them in a way that no textbook ever could. The novel's accessible language, relatable themes, and compelling narrative have helped students build confidence in their reading abilities while also expanding their vocabulary and comprehension skills. The conversations we've had about the story have been rich and thought-provoking, which is something I've noticed them doing more regularly now—asking deeper questions, making connections to their own lives, and analyzing characters' motivations. These are all valuable skills that I will continue to nurture in them.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts of reading \"A Long Way Down\" has been watching students who were previously reluctant readers come alive with excitement. For example, Maria, who usually struggles to stay engaged with texts, now talks about the book every day and eagerly shares her thoughts on the characters. It's been incredible to see her take ownership of her learning. Similarly, Amir, who often feels frustrated with reading, has shown a newfound interest in how the themes of the book relate to his own experiences as an English language learner in a new country. The discussions about loss, choices, and the power of storytelling have resonated deeply with many of my students, sparking reflections that are meaningful not only in the context of the book but also in their daily lives.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading is more than just decoding words—it's about connecting emotionally and intellectually to the material. With your help, I've been able to create a space where students feel safe to explore their thoughts and share them with others. We've had some of our most engaging group discussions around the moral dilemmas faced by the characters in \"A Long Way Down,\" and I can see their critical thinking skills growing with each session.\r\n\r\nThis gift of books has not only brought new literature into our classroom, but it has also opened new doors for learning, understanding, and personal growth. I can't thank you enough for making this possible. Your support has truly made a difference in the lives of my students.","fullyFundedDate":1732717601053,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-els-through-the-journey-of-a/8946678/","projectTitle":"\"Empowering ELs Through the Journey of a Long Way Down\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Murphy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7880765_orig.jpg?crop=2257,2257,x1236,y336&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1684246332509","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7880765"},{"teacherId":9798558,"projectId":8867511,"letterContent":"My students are very excited with the opportunity of integrating digital art with their writing assignments.
