After a year spent mostly indoors under COVID lockdowns, many incoming middle schoolers will lack age-appropriate socio-emotional skills and experiences. In English Language Arts teaching theory, we believe that building skills such as empathy, love, understanding, and caring are taught and learned through storytelling. The function of Literature Circles is not only to have student connect with and better understand the stories that they are reading, but also to see different perspectives from their peers upon their own reading. This collaborative process will help students to build and cultivate a small learning community where they can feel comfortable and safe to share their thoughts, feelings, and interpretations.
