Many students who have a "typical" home life are blessed with the average items and trends for their age. At other schools in our district, many have parents and caretakers that take the time to sit with their children and reinforce the learning at home. They will have supplies in the home just like school. The students I have unfortunately don't get to experience that. Many can't read each night because they don't have a book. Not a single one. I have created a classroom library for students to check out the most recent books. I try to keep the library updated as the book fair rolls around or see a good sale. These book titles have been popular in my class and I would love to surprise them with new editions for the holiday season. Throughout the day, the students fidget with their pencils, tear apart their erasers, and pick at their name tags. It becomes a hassle because these items need to be bought and the funds are not always available to keep replenishing. The fidget kits give the students an outlet to allow them to use their motor skills with fidgeting but not being destructive with the items needed for class. They aren't used to sitting for long periods of time as at home, where they have a lot of freedom with little structure. Our schedule this year has us in the classroom for over three hours straight learning. It's a long afternoon and lunch is at 10:30 in the morning, so their focus is off tremendously. These items can help keep them focused but also give them a needed outlet.
