Just Mercy is the true story of Bryan Stevenson, a young African-American attorney, who fought to defend the poor and wrongly condemned within the criminal justice system. Throughout the novel Stevenson addresses the ways in which his clients and him are impacted by systemic racism and a broken criminal justice system. I am seeking physical copies of Just Mercy to empower my students use literacy to dismantle oppressive systems. Throughout the unit students will engage in discourse and academic writing about the historic and present-day impact of power, privilege, and oppression.
