In previous grades, students have learned to read and love literature. In second grade, we step up the stamina and introduce students to longer books. When they first see a chapter book, they are intimidated, but the pride they have when they finish it is so special. I like to get them interested in a series so that they are looking for the next book when they finish one. They get immersed in the stories and learn to love the characters. As a child, I became a book lover when I got hooked on The Babysitter’s Club. Today, the Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House series captivate young readers and take them on adventures. I have used both of these books in the past and know the stories well. They provide a great plot and theme as well as opportunities for rich comprehension activities. Right now, my students are fully remote and do not have access to paper books. Virtual resources are great, but there is nothing like putting a real paper book into the hands of a child. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create.
