Every child is unique in their own way. Some children can learn by sitting calmly and focusing on the task at hand, while others need movement to help them hone in on their job. The students I work with often struggle with focus, their emotions, and confidence in their ability. They need certain things to hold to help keep their hands calm, to look at to calm their mind, to feel to calm their senses. When they are denied the chance to refocus their level of success in class plummets. Teaching a student how to regulate their emotions and to focus on a task sets them up for a healthy life. Items such as the Turnstone seat and the wobble seats allow a student to fidget in their seat while focusing on the teacher. The sensory toys let a student pull energy from their body out through their hands yet their eyes and ears remain focused. Using the calming bottles and lights helps a child to find a different focus for a few seconds, in turn resetting their emotions. The wobble board allows a student to stand and get their wiggles out while still participating in the classroom activities. Sensory items are of the utmost importance in the classroom. They help the student to regulate when they become overwhelmed and frustrated. These items keep wiggly kids in class longer by redirecting their extra energy. These students otherwise would often be sent out of the room because of behavior issues due to their frustrations. When they are not in the classroom they lose valuable educational time and then ultimately fall behind. The skills learned in the classroom will carry over into their home life, social life, and their future self.
