Students need books in their hands, especially since they are going to be spending most of their day on the computer. By having the novel we'll be studying at their homes they will be able to mark up the books and make it their own. Third grade has used the Fantastic Mr. Fox as a way to explore figurative language. Students love finding all the metaphors, similes, personification, and onomatopoeia. As we read, those phrases get thrown around the classroom and become part of our everyday language. Eventually, students even begin to use figurative language in their own writing! By using the book, students' engagement with this new language play rises and we discover not only a love of the written word but a whole new author whose books we want to read.
