Students are learning new playing techniques with breath control, buzzing their lips, using a slide and learning new songs. They are discovering how different ensembles (pep band, marching band) perform, and how those songs and bands sound. This has also been a great scaffolding moment from playing recorders last year, and developing new skills to then play a brass instrument.\r\n\r\nSeeing students' shock and awe when hearing the instrument for the first time was so special. They cheered when playing them for the first time, and seeing their slide extend all the way down was so fun to see.\r\n\r\nThe big project for the unit is students debuting the pBuzz instruments at the Winter Concert! Students are currently learning the school fight song to perform with the school rock bands. This will be a big moment for the parents to see these new instruments, and for the students to show the amazing progress they've made. In the next year or two we hope to continue with a middle school brass program where they will rent and play on various brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones. This will look similar to the high school programs they will encounter in the future. One of the most significant skills students are working on is analyzing themes and character motivations across different genres. The new books have varied in both tone and structure, allowing students to practice comparing narrative techniques and understanding how themes are developed in diverse contexts. For example, some texts have encouraged students to look closely at the role of setting in shaping character decisions, while others have prompted them to consider symbolism and its contribution to a larger message. These lessons not only enhance critical thinking but also push students to articulate their thoughts more clearly and back up their interpretations with textual evidence.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become more interactive and dynamic with these new texts. We often break into small groups for guided discussions, allowing students to engage in peer-to-peer learning while practicing their analytical skills. This format encourages students to ask questions, share perspectives, and refine their ideas based on the insights of others. Some of the students who seem especially drawn to the new books are those who have a keen interest in fantasy and science fiction. For them, the complexity of world-building and the moral dilemmas presented in these genres spark thoughtful debates and allow for deeper exploration of character arcs.
