The specimens (and associated teacher's manual) I am requesting will be the culminating experience of my zoology course! Students signed up for this course specifically to learn the intricate details of the animal world, with the desire to dissect a variety of organisms- something many of them have never done before. Dissections are a vital component of scientific learning because they allow students to learn about the internal structures of organisms, helps them experience first-hand how tissues, organs, and organ systems are related, explore the diversity (and connectivity) of life on earth, and gain an appreciation of the complexity of organisms in a hands-on environment. By funding my project, you will be providing students with the opportunity to discover and explore the animal kingdom up-close and personal. Students will be able to work together to dissect a real preserved dogfish shark, partaking in a unique experience of a lifetime that will not be forgotten. As a science teacher, it is my goal to make science learning fun and memorable for my students. Hands-on learning has a great impact on student engagement, and I have found it to be the best way to nurture and support inquisitive minds. This project will not only teach students about animal anatomy and physiology; it will allow them to be scientists as they make observations, generate questions, formulate hypotheses, and- most importantly- spark a curiosity with the potential to shape the future!
