What is one of the best ways to improve your writing skills in any language? READ! How can students gain new cultural perspectives about Spanish-speaking countries? READ! How can students build their vocabulary and fluency in Spanish? READ! One of the best ways for students to increase their intrinsic motivation and develop their interest in learning a language is to read compelling stories. Students learn more when they get to choose what they learn and I am so excited for the opportunity to build a small lending library of Spanish-novels for various reading levels and covering a range of contemporary themes and rooted in authentic cultural contexts. I have chosen novels that accompany the IB themes discussed in my class: Identity, Experiences, Social Organization, Human Ingenuity, and Sharing the Planet. I know that with compelling and contemporary stories, my students will be more engaged, demonstrate ownership of their learning, and improve their Spanish literacy.
