Creating an environment that allows students with autism to activate their senses is an extremely important part of child development. Sensory play or stimulation helps improve students' auditory, visual, and tactile processing. It also helps improve their fine and gross motor skills. As the school Behavior Management teacher, it is important that I provide my students with an area in which they can develop these skills. The Sensory Center will allow students this opportunity. The Sensory Center will enable students to stimulate their senses, but also provide the students with the opportunity for social interaction. Through the use of this center, students will be able to develop social skills. Students will be encouraged to communicate their thoughts and feelings, whether through verbal or nonverbal means. This Sensory Center will provide them with a safe environment to receive different therapies and develop the skills they will need to become independent individuals.
