With a year ahead of us in which safety and emotional needs take precedence, a sensory room will be integral for our kids. We anticipate trauma from an unknown pandemic, while also anticipating trauma from time away from school. Students of all types will be able to benefit from this room, including general education and special education students. The best thing we can do for our kids is to give them the safe space at school that they may not have anywhere else in their lives. Having a room with dim lighting using the fiber optic lights or the projection lights will be necessary for calming some students in times of crisis. Having flexible, comfortable seating will help when students are needing to spread out. The sensory wall hangings and objects will help to distract the mind, calm the body and fulfill those sensory needs.
