We have a small minority community that has very few job opportunities, and families rarely get out of the area enough to learn about people different from themselves. Many of our young students have never gone on a field trip, nor have they ever been exposed to people who speak a different language or are from a different cultural background. We lack access to adequate libraries, let alone books that embrace equality, diversity and multicultural ideas. Lack of exposure leads to a lack of understanding and opportunities to make changes in perspectives.
