The students in my class are so curious and inquisitive. They are willing to ask questions and dig deeper into topics that we learn about. We have good literature in our classroom, but most of our books do not address the important topic of race and the essential conversation about racism and equality that all children need to be having today. These new books would represent children from many cultures, backgrounds, and races while being age-appropriate for first graders. One of the most powerful ways to engage students in thoughtful conversations is to read good literature than their probe thinking by asking relevant and stimulating questions. With access to this unique set of books, our class will engage in meaningful read aloud throughout the year and be challenged in their thinking through discussions about the books. The books will also provide students with an opportunity to read and explore texts independently that represent children like them or that open their minds to the diversity that exists throughout the U.S. and the world. I am so excited to begin this journey with my students!
