Math is scary for many students, but with the right tools, it can seem less intimidating. Math should be fun and in order to make math fun, we need to get math off the paper! We do this by using math manipulatives, or tools. As a former reading teacher, I don’t have too many math tools in my collection, but I know what tools I need to make math jump off the paper for my 4th graders. With Cuisenaire Rods, students will be able to move pieces around to explore measurement, equations, and fractions. Geoboards will help students manipulate shapes. Collections of items like coins, playing cards, Tetris blocks, dice, and building blocks help students understand number sense by counting pieces and grouping items together. Coins are also great to teach place value and decimals with a real-world experience. Rulers and meter sticks help them learn measurement and fractions. All of these tools can be moved around so students can have concrete experience with math which helps them understand the abstract equations we see on paper. In addition to the math manipulatives, I also wish to integrate some reading into our math lessons with some math read alouds. The Sir Cumference book series and The Greedy Triangle are great texts to introduce math concepts we learn in 4th grade. Another great way to make math fun! By donating to this project, you are not only investing in a student’s math education, but you are helping provide students with the tools they need to become lifelong learners. Learning with math manipulatives, or tools provides the opportunity for students to work through tasks that will foster perseverance, problem-solving, communication skills, and flexibility. These are qualities of a mathematician, but also successful members of society.
