The summer reading program will be open to all the elementary school students in the school system and is being worked on by most of the school librarians in the district, of which I am one. We will be reading to the students through the summer starting on July 7th on Tuesdays and Thursdays and providing prizes based on virtual raffle tickets students will get for participating in each reading. There will be smaller prizes and larger prizes throughout the summer. Almost all of our students come from lower-income backgrounds and many of our students are English Language Learners. Summer reading is always important to maintain literacy over the summer months. With this recent transition to remote learning, it is even more critical to keep students engaged with literacy over the summer. We think this will be a great way to keep them engaged and excited about reading. Most of the librarians also hope to provide many other resources to students over the course of the summer, that provide them with opportunities for independent reading and other opportunities for learning virtually.
