These materials will be the core of literature circles for the slave narrative unit in my 11th grade American Literature English class. Although they include different perspectives and experiences, the students will be able to distinguish similar/overlapping themes in these texts and be able to make connections to other parts of history and even their own lives. Students will use these texts as a small group and analyze them over the course of the reading through different reading roles and discussions. When we come back as a whole group, the class can discuss those common, transcendent ideas that linked all the narratives together.
