Being a lover of the art form myself, I have found that graphic novels speak to potential young readers in ways that novels may not. Indeed, some of the more classic novels, while important, can be intimidating for students who are not yet confident in their ability as readers. This year, I have donated my own graphic novels, both of the superhero and independent genres, and have found success in utilizing them to bridge the gap between those who find reading enjoyable and those who have not yet found something of interest. Now I want to update our class library, with special attention given to female-forward graphic novels, both written by women, and spotlighting strong female protagonists!
