I am a Special Education Teacher in a Title One High School in the South Bronx, and my students have multiple severe disabilities, impairments, medical diagnoses, and physical limitations that significantly influence their abilities to learn. They neither learn the same nor at the same pace as their peers, because they face cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges. Students with disabilities require the most support, but my students are from low-income households so unfortunately, they do not always have access to the supplies, resources, and technology needed to help them acquire skills. My differently-abled students inspire me, because even though they face tremendous challenges, they are caring, funny, energetic, welcoming, and full of potential. I want to ensure that the environment is one that is welcoming to learning and aptly suited to meet their diverse needs (academic, vocational, and recreational).
