Right now we don’t have a carpet for read alouds and mini lessons. The students spend most of the day sitting at their desks. It is hard to implement strategies like turn and talk or flexible work options because the only materials are their desks. I want to create spaces where they can be comfortable and relaxed while working and engaging with the lesson and each other. Soft surfaces in the classroom will assist students who may need alternative seating or places to work. I’ve noticed that after awhile they tend to stand or sit inappropriately in the chairs and have expressed that sitting on the chairs all day are uncomfortable.
