Small-group reading is important because it enables teachers to observe students' reading behavior and provide support while they practice reading strategies. During small-group reading, students' reading abilities are matched to appropriate reading materials and peers at their same level. This allows teachers to demonstrate specific reading behaviors and strategies within context. A horse shoe table allows me to be in the center of it all. I can see all of the student's work, I can reach out to help them as needed. They can be grouped according to skill level, and therefore feel more comfortable and confident reading out loud, which so many kids struggle to do.
