Many students in my class will not turn in work if it has to be hand written, but give them a laptop and away they go! Perhaps it is a generational thing, but writing by hand, versus typing, inhibits them from writing. I am creative and include many art projects with instruction in order to allow students to show understanding in alternate ways. However, in an English class, writing is a must. Thus, in order to give my students social and technological equity, we need laptops to become good writers. Reading and writing in English class is necessary. Decoding the written and spoken word in English is essential to to succeed in life. Thus, in order to give our students an edge and take advantage of their bicultural heritage and dual word-banks, we need a class set of laptops so we can engage more and often in writing.
