These materials are going to give my students the hands-on engagement that they are seeking. This will allow them to focus on the material being taught and have better retention. Many of the projects will require the students to brainstorm, plan, build, and reflect in order to gain a foundation in the standard(s) we will be working on. The mathematical materials will give them a fun way to practice their math and when they use the hands-on approach, they are actively involved and will have a higher retention rate. The engineering and building materials will allow them to think critically about a problem given and then allow the opportunity for hypothesizing, testing (trial and error), data analysis, and reflection. This is essential in the scientific process so that they can build foundational skills and be ready for testing in the 5th grade.
