I teach basketball and other advanced classes at the high school level. I out specific classes in to meet the desires of our students. Basketball was the top choice at our school according to feed back from our student survey. For many of our students activity class is a "carrot" that gives a reason to make it to school regularly. Everyone's "carrot" or motivation is different and they should not be denied that. These urban students deserve the same opportunities as kids in other schools. I have coached and taught for 19 years. I have the knowledge to pass on to these learners, but we need tools. This class helps a large number of our fringe students get to school and stay in school and an outlet to deal with the stress of their lives, and gives them hope and pride in-themselves and the hope of a better tomorrow. These kids deserve more than the 200$ budget i get, for 16 classes my co-worker and I teach each year, for their education. 200$ doesn't cut it.
