Listening to fluent reading is an important part of early literacy learning. Having a listening center with working headphones allows my students to get an additional opportunity to listen to fluent readers and to hear voices other than my own. Since our combination cassette/CD player broke several years ago, we had used a variety of personal and donated CD players at our listening center. It would be great to have a durable, high quality player that is easy for my students to use independently. In addition to using the listening center during literacy instruction, I plan to used the headphones for our Dreambox instruction in math classes. Dreambox is an individualized, teacher-directed program that students complete with the use of the iPad card that we share with our school. Having these headphones in the classroom will make it easier for us to access Dreambox and these headphones are less likely to get tangled up. I spent a lot of time last year detangling cords so that students could hear the directions. The headphones will also be used by the rest of our kindergarten team. Having these materials in my classroom will help my students develop not only their literacy and mathematical skills, but will also foster independence - something we strive for in kindergarten!
