I have challenged my students to read books of every genre this year. Many of my students have only consumed books that have been required of them. I’m hoping that in allowing them to choose the books they read that they will be more apt to enjoy the process, and thus encourage them to pursue reading further. The challenge is to read at least one book of each genre by the end of the year. “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R.R. Martin Students spend time reading every day. Some even elect to stay in from recess to check books out from our classroom library. The books that I currently have are bent, earmarked and well-loved. I would like to provide a wide range of diverse books for my students. I want them to see themselves in the characters and I want the books to take them on journeys they've never been on.
