This project will bring beautiful new books to my classroom. These books tell stories that span time, place and human experience in order to widen the lens my students have on the world. Students will read books by award winning African American authors that celebrate jazz and Harlem. There are texts that celebrate the movement for women's suffrage. "The Turtle of Oman" tells the personal story of a family moving from the Middle East to America, as many of my students' families have done. Students will experience these texts in a variety of ways. The project includes single copies of picture books like "The Undefeated" by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by Kadir Nelson, with stunning images to engage readers in interactive read-aloud lessons. In this way, the books are teaching tools for me to inspire and motivate students as we read and comprehend through discussion. The project also includes sets of books, such as "The Turtle of Oman" by Naomi Shihab Nye, for a group of students to read and explore together in a small book group. All of the individual books can also be borrowed from our class library for independent reading. With these powerful stories, students will expand their consciousness. Perhaps they will see more of themselves in the story and deepen their own self awareness. Maybe they will listen to a classmate's reaction and thoughts and deepen their empathy and understanding. Who knows the bounds of our thinking when books feed us new knowledge? Students need these books to learn about diverse human experience in order to develop an understanding of the world and themselves!
