The purpose of this project is to provide space for teachers to discuss and understand some of the larger issues at play for our students. Teachers will choose which text to explore in the book club from this curated list of culturally responsive texts. Ideally, teachers will complete 2 texts per semester, depending on the length of the book, meeting weekly to discuss content and reflect together. Students deserve a culturally responsive and trauma-sensitive education. Students deserve to have their identities and backgrounds acknowledged, respected, and valued in their education. Students deserve teachers who value them wholly, who want to get to know them and learn from them. Such efforts can impact student academic achievement, health, and preparedness to disrupt inequities in the world. The goal of this book club is to prepare teachers to better serve their students as the reflect upon and adjust their current practices. The goal of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is to empower students. CRP requires an asset-based approach as opposed to popular deficit-oriented teaching methods, which position the languages, cultures, and identities of students as barriers to learning. Culturally responsive educators promote a collaborative learning experience with their students. This allows students the opportunity to exercise their autonomy and take ownership of their education.
