My plan for the fall of 2021 is for my Spanish students to create an exhibit for Day of the Dead. The project will be very student-centered. Students will create artwork and will use it as a part of the display. Some initial ideas I have for honoring the deceased are dedicating the exhibit to people who lost their lives in the Surfside Condo collapse or the lives lost at the Native American boarding schools. Students will make and decorate sugar skulls, make paper cut-outs, traditional Mexican flowers for the celebration, and learn about unique Day of the Dead history and traditions in both Mexico and Guatemala. Students will also do some cooking focusing around Day of the Dead and create an exhibit in the atrium at school for the community to see.
