Our High School is a Title One school in a challenging area in Orange County. My students struggle to bring pencils and paper to school every day, as well as to find the motivation to read, and do problems out of a large text book. If I assign homework problems out of the text fewer than half the students will complete them. My students are mostly Hispanic, and cannot relate to problems in the text, or to the way it is written. Although they are very smart, my students do not see the connection between math in the classroom and the real world, and I want them to understand how useful and important math is.
