Each of these three books are very diverse and different from one another. Every student should read at least one Shakespearean play/novel, however, I don't think it should or have to be one that is a drama or historical piece. 'Taming of the Shrew' is a comedy piece that will allow the students to find more humor in literature, while also learning about Shakespearean language. The novel titled 'Speak' is a novel that addresses a very serious topic; the main character, who is in my students age range, goes through a traumatic experience and the book follows the character throughout the experience and how they handle it during the time span of a year. I would like to use this book to teach not just on how the plot slowly develops the reader's idea of what the traumatic event was, but also how traumatic events can cause ripple effects when dealt with in different ways. The novels I chose can be harder to read because of content, but that can also shift based on how deep the students, as a class and as individuals, want to reach into it. I think these books will give them a good chance to find resemblances of themselves in specific characters and allow them to reach deeper into the novel to find what they think the message is.
