My students come from low-income households with very little opportunities for a fair chance at an equal and equitable education. They are all learning English as a new language, and they are all struggling with succeeding at school. Most have never seen a play, or played a musical instrument for that matter. Our school simply does not have the economic resources for field trips to a theater or a music center. Sadly, most of our students culminate from our elementary school without ever being exposed to the wonders of music and movement as part of our curriculum. That being said, my goal is to be able to tap and breach the gap of their different learning modalities by fusing music and movement into our daily curriculum. Studies have shown that music and movement provides a fun, interactive, stimulating, learning experience for children. Your generous donations will assist in providing musical instruments to my students--in doing so you will be helping to shape their social emotional learning through music and movement. Music and movement bring about countless benefits. From developing their language, memory and social skills to creative thinking and focused listening, they also start to build music foundations such as singing in tune and moving in time. We will enhance their learning by developing their gross and fine motor skills, cognitive thinking, numeracy and literacy through imagination, kinesthetic learning, composition of music pieces, songs and movement. My goal is to provide my students with an educational experience that will promote academic, physical, emotional and social growth while instilling a love for the arts. They will find success in the arts, and this will give them a sense of empowerment and understanding that through hard work and tenacity they can accomplish anything!
