I have a small group of students that get an hour a day of resource, pull-out, reading. They really love to read, but all of them have some difficulty with different aspects of reading. During distance learning in the spring, their teachers did a book study with their classes. The teachers recorded themselves reading parts or chapters of the book and then giving the students an activity that went with each part. I helped my students to complete this work and saw how they struggled with being able to do the work without having a copy of the book in front of them. I have chosen the book, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, by Kwame Mbalia, which is similar to the Percy Jackson series. The main character, Tristan Strong, is an African American boy and throughout the story, he references several African folktales to help him solve his problems. Most of the students in my small group are young boys of color and I would love for them to read a story that has a main character that looks like them.
