By the time our population of students walk through the door, they have already experienced so many negatives often times that is the only life they know. They come to us due to behavioral, social-emotional or academic issues. These students are in desperate need not only for consistency and structure, but more importantly for someone to just believe in them. Most likely by the time they are referred to our alternative school, they have had very little or limited support. The strongest skills our students have are survival. However, if they can be shown that success does not discriminate, those traits they already possess could be redirected into molding dynamic, productive adults. By engaging in growth mindset activities and discussions, then taking ownership of their own futures, our students for the first time may be exposed to possibilities they never knew existed. These kids need tangibility. They need hope. Can you remember a time when you needed help and got exactly what you needed? Now imagine that same scenario with absolutely no one there for you. Many of these students experience the latter on a daily basis. Providing a safe, strong, structured environment for them to explore what they CAN be will bring the focus off what they can't.
