There are many things that must be shared in our classroom. The list is almost endless. The things that students do not have to share get to be placed in their drawer. Their drawer becomes a very special place. It is so important for each student to feel a sense of belonging in the classroom, having a personal space that belongs just to them provides that sense of ownership, even if it is just one drawer. That drawer holds the work that they haven't quite finished yet and aren't ready for anyone to see. Their journal with the words they are just learning to spell. The library book that they picked out just for themselves. These drawers keep their work and belongings separate and organized from their peers.
