The storage unit I am currently using has been with this classroom for the 12 years I've been teaching in this building. It would be beneficial to replace the current shelving unit due to it's instability. Students with a background of trauma require need a classroom that provides a safe environment. The current storage unit will frequently fall over, which startles the students. This results in the students not feeling safe in this environment. Storage units are necessary to hold the many manipulatives, academic puzzles, and shared materials such as crayons necessary when teaching Kindergarten. In a classroom like ours students are also taught autonomy by using storage units accessible for them to get the materials they need to complete projects. This autonomy can branch into other areas of development.
