Studies show that high classroom temperatures, as well as low classroom temps, can affect a student’s ability to learn and function. Our school is nestled between the Koko Head crater and the colorful coral reef of Hanauma Bay on the island of O'ahu. My students enjoy an immense exotic environment in which to learn. But with this beauty, comes the challenge of maintaining a cool classroom environment. Schools in Hawaii are creative in this regard, often built with slatted windows to entice the trade winds to help fight off the heat. These efforts are often not enough, as our classrooms must accommodate 30-40 students. My students will tell you, "it is too HOT in here!" I want to provide them with adequate climate control so that they can focus more on learning and less on wiping off sweat. I am an active teacher and I enjoy keeping an active classroom. Having a new air conditioner will immediately have a positive impact on my students' learning.
