While educational supplies are essential for every classroom, many times basic needs such as clothing and food are also provided for students in high poverty schools. The last basic need is shelter, and while I cannot provide a home for my students outside of the classroom - I can provide a consistent safe, sleeping environment inside of it. As a Pre-K teacher, my students do spend 90 minutes of their day napping - this rest time is well needed considering their little minds have been going strong for nearly 5 hours in the morning learning social skills, academics, independent life skills to include physical and fine motor activities (we all learned how to ride a bike, cut paper and tie our shoes sometime) and attending resources such as Music, Art, Media and PE. Children having a stable, safe and familiar place to learn, eat and sleep is invaluable. I cannot expect young children to learn without first meeting their basic needs; a classroom set of cots will provide years for my students the assurance that they are safe and cared for in Mrs. Burchfield's class. Thank you so much for your consideration.
