I teach a self-contained special education class, with 8 students in grades 3-5. I work alongside 2 paraprofessionals. The students in my classroom are on the autism spectrum. The majority of the students are 1-2 years below grade level in reading and math. The goal of my specific class is to move these students from a self-contained room into an inclusion classroom at another school with their general education counterparts. They are all very bright and function independently. Each student is at various reading levels, ranging from early 2nd grade to late 3rd grade readers. Across the board, my students struggle with reading comprehension, fluency and independent writing.
